Thomas Lee is an Associate Director and a Consultant of Document Engineering Services, an international consortium of experts supporting universal business interoperability through the use of open standards. He is also a Research Officer and Instructor of the Department of Computer Science, the University of Hong Kong (HKU).

Thomas was a co-founder/CTO of the Center for E-Commerce Infrastructure Development (CECID), HKU, which researched and developed open-source software (OSS) for business-to-business (B2B) collaboration and established the freebxml.org initiative to promote global development of ebXML OSS. Under Thomas's R&D leadership, CECID released its flagship OSS product, Hermes B2B Server, which enabled businesses to achieve B2B interoperability through mainstream messaging protocols, such as ebXML Message Service, AS2 and Web Services. The success of Hermes was recognized by several awards, including the Asia Pacific ICT Awards, and the Drummond Group AS2 certification. Hermes has become a leading B2B messaging OSS with many global production deployments.

Thomas also participated in various regional and international e-commerce standardization activities, such as the eGovernment Interoperability Framework, and Digital Trade and Transportation Network (DTTN) in Hong Kong, ebXML Asia, and OASIS Universal Business Language. Apart from his industry participation, Thomas currently focuses on his academic research in data interoperability and semantic web, and teaches the Master course "Web Technologies" in HKU.

Thomas is currently a PhD candidate in HKU. He has received degrees in MBA (2000), MSc. Computer Science (1996), BEng. Computer Engineering (1994).


Career History:

2007 - now: Research Officer and Instructor, Department of Computer Science, HKU. Conducts basic research in the field of data interoperability and semantic web. Teaches a Master course on web technologies.

2002 - 2006: Chief Technology Officer, Center for E-Commerce Infrastructure Development, HKU. Oversaw the R&D operation of the Center for E-Commerce Infrastructure Development (CECID), an e-commerce R&D center in the University of Hong Kong. Developed the open-source Hermes B2B Message Gateway for B2B messaging with ebXML, AS2, and Web Services, which received awards from Hong Kong IT Excellence Awards, Linux Business Awards, and the Asia Pacific ICT Awards. Managed R&D projects of US$4M funding awarded by Government and the industry to produce technologies in XML, ebXML, Web Services, Web 2.0. Established the freebXML.org initiative to promote development and adoption of open source software for B2B e-commerce.

2007: Chief Technologist. Review of the Technical Architecture and the Delivery of Government Electronic Trading Services. Provided consultancy to the Hong Kong Government in reviewing the technical architecture of the government trade declaration gateway and formulating the principal requirements for implementation of the next generation gateway.

2006: Data Architect, Works Projects Information Standards - Environment, Transport and Works Bureau, Hong Kong Government. Provided document engineering services to the Hong Kong Government in standardizing XML schemas for document exchange in the building and construction industry.

2005 - 2006: Consultant and Technical Committee Member - Digital Trade and Transportation Network Document Standardization, DTTN Limited. Provided document engineering consultancy to DTTN Limited in XML standardization of 100 business documents for B2B exchange.

2006 Deputy Project Investigator - Project Plumber: Service Oriented e-Transaction Platform (1M USD funded by Hong Kong Government). Produced B2B web services process modeling and messaging software. Received Hong Kong Linux Business Awards.

Received Merit from Asia Pacific ICT Awards.

2003: Technical Architect - Weather Information Standards, Hong Kong Observatory, Hong Kong Government. Provided consultancy in standardizing the XML schemas for weather information exchange between the government and businesses.

2003: Technical Architect - Dangerous Goods Declaration, Marine Department, Hong Kong Government. Provided consultancy in standardizing the XML schemas for dangerous goods declaration and implementing the ebXML messaging gateway for exchanging dangerous goods manifests between the government and shipping agents.

2002 - 2004: Project Manager - Project Phoenix: ebXML Software Infrastructure (1.2M USD funded by Hong Kong Government). Produced open-source ebXML products with global deployments. Received Merit from Hong Kong IT Excellence Awards.
